Why do we need skin care products?

Your skin is the largest barrier between your external and internal environment. In this modern day society, we are regularly exposed to blue light screen, pollutants (from cars, factories, chimneys etc) and UV rays from the sun (UVA and UVB). Particularly since a lot more of us are working from home, we are often working longer hours at our computers and devices, which again puts strain on our eye and skin health.

Everything that goes in and on the body is absorbed to an extent and as a result, releases by-products. So a simple example would be that when we breathe in oxygen, we exhale carbon dioxide as if it stayed inside us, it would become poisonous. Another example is that any food the body can't process collects together with all the toxic waste, which should prepare to leave the body regularly to sustain a healthy balance.

Everything happens at a cellular level too, so if your skin is continuously exposed to toxins, it is important you learn ways to manage it and reduce it as much as possible.

How to manage your body's toxic load:

External:

  • Wear SPF (try and get one which PA +++) to maximise the filtration of UVA and UVB

  • Use a cleanser to use remove ALL traces of external toxins from the skin - the longer it sits in the skin, the more of it will be absorbed by the skin and create more toxic stress for the body to deal with

  • Use an exfoliater to scrub out any blackheads (usually little collections of dirt) regularly

  • Use a moisturizer to help your skin stay hydrated

  • Minimise use of electronics as best you can

  • Set your phone to night mode (reduces blue light)

Internal:

  • Sweat out your toxins and exercise regularly (as a rule of thumb, try not to go more than 3 days without exercising). Keep active throughout the day

  • Manage your stress (hormones and chemicals often pile on toxic load if emotional or physiological stressors are not balanced). Try journalling, talking to someone or using your hobbies as an outlet etc.

  • Eat a balanced diet

  • Eat foods rich in anti-oxidants as these will help your body to combat any free radicals in the body (heightened levels of free radicals can lead to DNA damage and cancer)

  • Eat more whole foods

  • Reduce eating high refined carbs or sugars

  • Don't overdo it on the protein - high protein diets are showcased to be favourable, but protein is responsible for growth and repair, so if you eat too much, you may be heightening your risk of growing and repairing damaged cells in the body. To ensure you are getting adequate amounts of protein (not too much or too little, see a PT or a nutritionist).

I will soon be reviewing their products on both my social media pages and the blog, so stay tuned.
